Creepy 'Sweeney Todd' opens to critical praise

"Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" opened to strong reviews on Broadway, with the New York Times calling it "thrilling" and "one helluva show" and Variety declaring it "the freshest, most beguiling act to hit Broadway in quite some time."

The revival of the Stephen Sondheim show stars Michael Cerveris and Patti LuPone.

More from the Times' review:

Surely no previous production of "Sweeney Todd" has had such a high quotient of truly unsettling horror or such a low quotient of conventional stage spectacle. Mr. Doyle, conditioned by the economic limitations of long years in regional theater, delivers what is, on one level, a skeletal "Sweeney." This production features one set, 10 actors (excellent) and 10 musicians (also excellent). The actors and musicians, by the way, are the same people.
"Sweeney Todd" is on at the Eugene O'Neill Theater, located at 230 W. 49th St.
