City prepares plan for December transit strike
New York City transit union leaders are warning they could call for an illegal walkout Dec. 15 when their workers' contract, leaving commuters and tourists in a last-minute bind with no subways or buses.
The city is preparing an emergency plan that calls for increased ferry and PATH train service, car-pools only for Manhattan and allowing taxis to pick up multiple fares simultaneously, according to the Daily News.
In 2002, a similar plan was in place and Manhattan hotels filled up with workers afraid they wouldn't be able to get onto the island in the face of a strike. That year, there was no walk out as the union and city reached a deal a few after the deadline.
The city's last transit strike was April 7, 1980.
