Brooklyn Cruise Guide launches web site

The new cruise ship terminal in Red Hook, Brooklyn is scheduled to open until April 2006, but a new website, BrooklynCruiseGuide.com, is already up and running to direct travelers to the cruise options and offer guidance to the borough's scant hotel offerings.

"I decided to create a site for Brooklyn cruises because of the lack of information out there. Cunard and Princess cruise lines are taking reservations for cruises from Brooklyn, and we're just trying to help people answer the questions they're certain to ask," Greg Manter, one of the site's creators, said in an e-mail to NewYorkology.

Beginning in June, the Crown Princess will make nine-day roundtrip voyages to the eastern and western Caribbean from Brooklyn, while the Queen Mary II will make make nine cruises from Brooklyn to England in 2006, according to the Brooklyn Cruise Guide.

Pictures taken today (above and left,) are evidence the Brooklyn terminal has a long winter to go before it's scrubbed shiny for the cruise ship passengers. The parking lot is dug up in spots, trash is all over the area and the main building is stacked high with construction equipment. But the picture of ther terminal (top,) hints at the million-dollar view to come: the Manhattan skyline is on the left while the Brooklyn skyline is at right.

brooklynmarineterminal.JPGThe Virginia-based team behind the Brooklyn site today is launching a New York Cruise Guide, covering ships that sail from the city's main cruise ship terminal on the west side of Manhattan.

For other cruise information on the web, see CruiseCritic.com and the Wired New York cruise ship webcam, which also lists dates and times you can head over the the Hudson River Park to catch floating cities sail along the New York/New Jersey state line.
