Bratwurst cart at 54th and 5th wins Vendy Award

vendywinnerNew York City's best food cart vendor is Rolf Babiel of Hallo Berlin, who sells bratwursts, kielbasa, and knockwursts on the corner of 5th Avenue and 54th Street.

Babiel last night won the first annual Vendy Award, based on a number of factors including food portability and vendor personality, according to the Associated Press.

"The food is cheap and fantastic. He offers his wares with a really crusty bun, two types of kraut, the BEST sauteed onions and homemade mustards and curry sauces. The line for the food is long, because it's THAT good. Plus the added fact of his great sense of humor, he knows his customers and chats with us and I always leave with a smile on my face," one customer said in nominating Hallo Berlin. That testimonal can be found on the Vendy finalist page, which lists the other nominees picked from the city's estimated 10,000 food and merchandise vendors.
