The Plaza update: pigeon poop edition

As renovations at The Plaza proceed behind chain-link fences, at least the birds are content. A team of prolific pigeons has taken up residence at the historic hotel's entrance facing Central Park, making their presence known through a big pile of poop covering otherwise grand ornamentation flanking the door.
And on the street, to the joy of dumpster divers everywhere, is easy access to Plaza detritus free for the taking. Not quite as good as the last winter's Flatiron dumpster diving opportunity, and a little smelly.
The Plaza has been closed since April and owners have said it's on track to finish its 18-month renovation in time to reopen for its 100th anniversay at the end of 2006. While maintaining some of its most famous spaces, The Plaza will be reconfigured to accommodate luxury retail shops and 180 condos, keeping only 150 hotel rooms, none of which will have park views.
