Playwright August Wilson dies of lung cancer
African-American playwright August Wilson, who won two Pulitzers, a Tony, and seven New York Drama Critics' Circle awards for plays such as "Fences," and "The Piano Lesson," has died of lung cancer at age 60, the New York Times reports.
Earlier this summer, it was announced that Broadway's Virginia Theatre would be renamed after Wilson, who the Times called "theater's poet of black America."
Off-Broadway's Signature Theatre, which devotes each season to the work of a single playwright, earlier said it would delay its August Wilson line-up to the 2006-07 season, according to Playbill.
