Getting to the top fast: Empire State Building edition
About 3 percent of the visitors to the Empire State Building are paying more than twice the regular price in order to skip the long lines, according to a story in the Tampa Tribune about VIP passes at tourist destinations.
In May, the Empire State Building started selling express tickets, now priced at $35, that gets visitors to the 86th floor observatory deck in under 20 minutes. The regular ticket is $14, with waits up to an hour and a half, (though 45 minutes is more common.)
When Rockefeller Center opens its rooftop decks November 1, it will use a timed-entry ticketing system that aims to eliminate lines altogether.
