Free ice rink to open at Bryant Park in late October

Bryant Park this winter will get an Olympic-sized, portable ice skating rink that will be free for skaters, up to 500 at a time, the New York Times reports.

At 17,000 square feet, the Bryant Park rink will be about half the size of the Wollman Rink in Central Park and twice the size of The Rink at Rockefeller Center.

The layer of 3-inch-thick ice will sit atop layers of plastic and foam covering Bryant Park's flattened sod. Under the sod is the New York Public Library's underground annex full of books in a climate-controlled room.

The rink will open Oct. 28, and close Jan. 15 to make way for the spring fashion show normally scheduled at Bryant Park.

Bryant Park skate rentals will cost $7.50 a day, but admission is waived thanks to corporate sponsorship from Citigroup. Compare that to Rockefeller Center, where adult admission prices start at $13 plus $7 for skate rental, and Wollman, which costs $11 on weekends and $3.75 for skates.

Bryant Park is located on 6th Ave between 42nd and 41st streets, directly behind the main New York Public Library building.
