Who can you trust online for hotel advice?

NewYorkology Travel garnered a mention from London's The Sunday Times this past weekend in a story about which web sites you can trust when seeking advice about the quality of a hotel you're considering.

The Sunday Times favors sites such as TravelBlog, TripAdvisor, Holidays Uncovered and Slow Travel and here are a few other good ones that didn't make the paper's list: HotelChatter, Bidding forTravel, CitySearch and Epinions. The New York Times' Travel section also makes the Fodor's New York hotel content free online.

Also worth your time is TripAdvisor's New York City forum, where a question about just about anything -- from hotels and restaurants to the best places to visit with a 13-year-old -- will be answered by fellow travelers or locals usually wihin few hours.

Though as The Sunday Times points out, you can never tell who is posting the reviews online. It could be the hotel's own PR agency -- or its competitor -- posing as a guest and littering the independent travel guides with biased comments.
