Ground Zero photographer discusses new museum
Gary Marlon Suson, the official Ground Zero photographer for the main FDNY union, tonight will lead a discussion about his Ground Zero Museum Workshop, which opened last week on 14th Street.
Suson spent seven months at Ground Zero during the recovery process, and his resulting images are powerful, intimate portraits of the individuals working through great loss in heartbreaking circumstances. The not-for-profit museum workshop, actually just a single room painted in white, is filled with his pictures, video and remnants from the site, all broken and frozen in time to Sept. 11, 2001.
Suson is an honarary FDNY Battalion Chief and his project has been endorsed by the Uniformed Fire Officers Association and many of the Sept. 11 families.
Tonight's event will be held at Design Within Reach at 408 West 14th St. from 7 to 9 p.m. Small groups will also be taken just down the street to the museum for tours after the Q&A session, Suson said.
There is no charge to attend this event but regular museum admission is $15. Museum proceeds go to six non-profit charities: the Uniformed Firefighters Association Widows and Children’s Fund, September 11th Families Association/WTC Tribute Center, HugsAcrossAmerica.net, Trauma Response Assistance for Children, Firefighter Ralph Geidel 9/11 Fund and the Brian E. Sweeney Memorial Fund.
The museum is located in the Meatpacking District at 420 W. 14th Street. Map.
