'Children of Darfur' photographs at United Nations

havivdarfur.jpg

Photojournalist Ron Haviv's "Children of Darfur" exhibition last night opened at the United Nations headquarters with a benefit auction for UNICEF's work in that region of Sudan.

About 1.5 million children have been impacted by the fighting in the Darfur region of Sudan, according to the U.N. In Haviv's photographs, the children are often working - making bricks, herding sheep and gathering firewood despite the threat of rape for the girls. In one, child soldiers lounge around a gun in the back of a truck. Showing no fear in their eyes, they look more like they're posing for an album cover, the middle child wearing camouflage fatigues and dark glasses, all attitude. Another picture nearby is a girl holding a tiny cup hoping for a little bit of water to drink.

Some of the images are online at VII Photo Agency's web site.

The exhibit will remain on the first floor of the United Nations through Oct. 31. No need to pay for the U.N. tour to see the pictures, but you will have to go through the visitors security tent at the north of the U.N. complex.
