CBGB gets eviction notice but the bands play on

Embattled rock club CBGB received its eviction notice late Wednesday, but owner Hilly Kristal issued a statement saying "(t)here is no valid reason why CBGB should leave our present historic location," and sought further negotiians with the building's landlord.

The club's lease at 315 Bowery expird at the end of August and the non-profit homeless agency that owns the building has raised the rent higher than CBGB says it can afford. The seminal club helped launch the careers of bands such as Blondie, the Talking Heads and The Ramones. In recent months, celebrities such as Stevie Van Zandt have led fundraisers to help the 30-year-old club remain open at it current location. Kristal has hinted he might move the club to Las Vegas if he can't stay where he is.

Meanwhile, the club has a full scheudle of September shows, including the Circle Jerks on Sept. 9 and Helmet on Sept. 28.
