Mass transit threat level drops to 'elevated'; not in NY
The Department of Homeland Security this evening will lower the national threat level for mass transit to yellow (elevated) from orange (high). It has been at the higher level since the July 7 attacks on London's transportation sytem.
UPDATE: Although the national alert was lowered, New York City chose to stay on a higher alert. From the Daily News: New York police said the city would stay on its usual higher alert, apart from the federal warning status, and random searches of bags on the subways would continue. The searches began after attackers set off more bombs in London on July 21 but failed to cause any damage.
On Thursday, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly also said the city had been warned by the FBI of possible fuel truck attacks against New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, but officials said the warning was based on unconfirmed intelligence. Earlier: Pataki calls in National Guard to protect NYC transit
