Tourist helicopter crashes in East River near Wall St.
A sightseeing helicopter this afternoon crashed into the East River after takeoff with seven people onboard though only one was seriously injured, according to the New York Times.
The helicopter, operated by Helicopter Flight Services, crashed at the Pier 11 Wall Street Heliport, NY1 is reporting.
The front page of the company's website touts its safety: Fly with the safest and most dependable Helicopter Company in New York. Helicopter Flight Services, Inc. has been operating for over 20 years without accidents, incidents or violations and have annually received the Helicopter Association International Safety Award. Update: The NY1 reporter at the scene is reporting the tourists on the copter are from Australia and France. After the hard landing on the water, the pilot and all the passengers were able to evacuate and get on top of the inverted helicopter before rescue crews arrived.
Update 2: One of the passengers is in critical condition in a medically induced coma tonight, according to the latest news reports. (Earlier text corrected above that said all passengers were not seriously hurt.) The helicopter is now sitting upright near the waterfront in Brooklyn along Furman Street.
