New Mets stadium could host 2012 Olympics - mayor
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg yesterday threw his support to a new baseball stadium for the Mets, in hopes that the venue could also be used as the new centerpiece for the city's bid to home the 2012 Olympics.
Only last week the mayor's plans for a new Jets football stadium were quashed by a state panel that refuse to allocate pubic financing for a West Side stadium that had about half the city extremely ticked off.
Under the new proposal, the new Mets stadium would be built by 2009 adjacent to the Mets' current home, Shea Stadium in Queens. The Mets would pay about $600 million, the city and state would add about $180 million for infrastructure around the stadium plus an extra $100 million to convert the stadium for Olympic use.
The Olympic committee will meet July 6 to choose a host city for the 2012 summer games. Reports on the stadium deal are in the New York Times, the Post, the Daily News, Newsday and the Sun.
