Bargain madhouse Century 21 expanding downtown

Century 21, the bargain hunters' mecca in Lower Manhattan is expanding yet again, this time with a new mezzanine level on the store's Church Street side, according to the Daily News.

The store, located across the street from Ground Zero, has already started work on the project and plans to open the expanded area in September.

The new circular space will open in the center to emphsize the three-story-high domed ceiling of the former East River Savings Bank, the Daily News reports.

The paper quotes Century 21's executive director complaining about the "slow rebound" since Sept. 11 yet makes no mention of the huge expansion of the shoe department a year ago or the fact that the store is just as crowded and the lines just as long as they were before Sept. 11. Map.
