Viva Coney Island - redevelopers look to Vegas
Las Vegas has its own New York-themed casino, and now New York hopes to give the Vegas treatment to run-down Coney Island.
A glitzy, neon-lit covered midway would take over Stillwell Avenue while the Boardwalk would be filled with open-air cafes, a hotel and spa on the beach and a new glass entrance for the New York Aquarium, according to the draft master plan revealed last night by the Coney Island Development Corp. Plans also call for fire jugglers on unicycles, movie theaters, bowling alleys, arcades, apartment buildings and ferry service to Stillwell Avenue, according to the Daily News. The hope is to turn the seedy, summer-only spot into a year-round entertainment destination and recapture the pre-Depression era glory of Coney Island.
