New Brooklyn luxury hotel slotted for Smith Street
There is yet another hotel planned for Brooklyn, this one a luxury jobber set to bear the moniker The Smith, according to the Post.
Located at the intersection of Smith Street and Atlantic Avenue it's close to the still-very-hot Smith St. restaurant row, a few blocks from the Transit Museum and Borough Hall's plentiful subway stops. And directly across the street is a towering detention facility, or in lay terms, a jail. You can't miss it; it's the one with all the razor wire around the property and heavy bars over all the windows - even at penthouse level.
When I walked by the facility this afternoon, two maintenance guys at a new condo project on the other side of the jail said the condos in that building were almost all sold, despite the fact that they're across the street from a jail. And if Mayor Bloomberg wants more development in the neighborhood, that jail will surely face the wrecking ball soon, they reasoned.
Meanwhile across the street, The Smith is just a hole in the ground but it's set to open as a 13-floor building in June 2006 as a 93-room hotel with 50 luxury residential condos, according to the Post.
