'Spamalot,' 'Scoundrels,' lead Tony nominations

"Spamalot," "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," "Glengarry Glen Ross," "Doubt" and "The Light in the Piazza" led the nominations announced this morning for the 2005 Tony Awards.

The nominees for best play are "Democracy," "Doubt," "Gem of the Ocean" and "The Pillowman." In the best musical category, the nominations went to "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," "The Light in the Piazza," "Monty Python's Spamalot" and "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee."

Best Special Theatrical Event: "Dame Edna: Back with a Vengeance!," "Laugh Whore," "700 Sundays" and "Whoopi, the 20th Anniversary Show"

Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play:
Philip Bosco - "Twelve Angry Men"

Bill Irwin - "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"
James Earl Jones - "On Golden Pond"
BrĂ­an F. O'Byrne - "Doubt"

Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play:
Cherry Jones - "Doubt"
Laura Linney - "Sight Unseen"
Mary-Louise Parker - "Reckless"
Phylicia Rashad - "Gems of the Ocean"
Kathleen Turner - "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"

Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical:
Hank Azaria - "Spamalot"
Gary Beach - "La Cage aux Folles"
Norbert Leo Butz - "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels"
Tim Curry - "Spamalot"
John Lithgow - "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels"

Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical:
Christina Applegate - "Sweet Charity"
Victoria Clark - "The Light in the Piazza"
Erin Dilly - "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang"
Sutton Foster - "Little Women"
Sherie Rene Scott - "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels"

None of the actors in "Glengarry Glen Ross" were eligible for best actor, however, three of them were nominated in the featured actor category: Alan Alda, Gordon Clapp and Liev Schreiber. A full list of the nominations can be found at the Tony Awards official site.

Tickets for the June 5th black-tie awards ceremony also went on sale this morning.
