NYPD: no need for subway camera ban

In a misguided attempt to protect the city from terrorists, the city's transit agency has been threatening to adopt a ban on all photography in the subways. Undaunted that thousands of pictures already exist of the century-old system or the problems with enforcement, the MTA has pressed ahead. Until now.

The Daily News reports that the New York Police Department doesn't want the ban.

"We are not pressing for a ban," NYPD Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne told The News.

Not having a ban will not hinder the NYPD's efforts to safeguard the city's vast transit system, Browne said.

"Our officers will continue to investigate, and intercede if necessary, if the activity - photo-related or not - is suspicious," he said.
Although cameras are legal in the subway, they are still illegal at the entrances to many of the city's bridges and tunnels. Despite that, you can see many of them live on the transit agency's own web cams. A selection:
