National Sports Museum to open downtown

The National Sports Museum will open in downtown Manhattan in the autumn of 2006. If you're a fan of some obscure sport you want represented there, you should probably give them a buzz because it sounds like they're not turning anyone down. Re the press release:

It will house modern interactive exhibits and memorabilia celebrating baseball, basketball, football, hockey, golf, tennis, boxing, track and field, soccer, swimming, lacrosse, extreme sports, auto racing, equestrian events, and other sports. The museum/attraction is being created in collaboration with a growing list of North America's sports halls of fame, museums and organizations. Partners, include the Basketball, Hockey, NCAA, Women's Sports, College Football and World Golf Halls of Fame, as well as the Negro Leagues Museum, Yogi Berra Museum and NASCAR, and each will have a presence in the entry-rotunda "Hall of Halls."
The National Sports Museum will be home to the Heisman Trophy as well as the Bob Cousy award, which goes to the best point guard in college basketball each year. The 100,000 square foot museum will also hold a 360-degree theater, a themed cafe and retail space.

Funded by private investors and $52 million of post-9/11 Liberty Bonds, the museum will occupy a landmark office building near the southern tip of Manhattan that was built in 1921 for the Cunard passenger ship line, according to Reuters.
