N train returns to Coney Island; 9 disappears forever
Wrapping up a four-year renovation project, the N subway train today will resume service to the Coney Island Stillwell Avenue terminal. The city's transit agency calls the line "Broadway Express," though many riders refer to the N as the "Never," and its companion R train as the "Rarely."
The renovation of the Stillwell Avenue terminal, which is within walking distance to the beach, makes it the country's biggest urban transit terminal, according to NY1.
In other transit changes, all 9 train service will be discontinued as of Tuesday. The rush-hour only train runs from the Bronx, ending at the South Ferry terminal in Lower Manhattan. Since it duplicates 1 train service, there will not be a reduction in service, according to the transit agency. "Most customers will benefit from faster overall travel times. Service will be as frequent as it was when the 9 operated," the MTA said.
