MoMA Remixed - unofficial audio museum guides
Art Mobs is creating a set of free, unofficial guides to the Museum of Modern Art that can be played on iPod or mp3 players.
Several guides are already available, but the project allows anyone to upload their own guide, basically curating their own little corner of MoMA, according to David Gilbert, whose students at Marymount Manhattan College designed Art Mobs.
Current unofficial MoMA offerings include art criticism "more sardonic than saccharine" from an MMC art history professor who doesn't take himself too seriously, as well as musical soundtracks inspired by MoMA works, including samples of symphonic themes, 1950's TV ads, speed-metal and Brooklyn hip-hop.
The official MoMA audio guide costs $5. In addition to the routine commentary, it also includes a guide for kids and "extended visual descriptions for visitors with visual impairments."
Head to Art Mobs to learn more about the unofficial MoMA guides and how to get the free podcast feeds. As always, the museum's $20 admission fee is waived Friday evenings from 4 to 8 p.m.
