Lawsuits, $2 mln campaign challenge Plaza
The Plaza is indeed heading for a tacky exit from the ranks of New York's top hotels. As it prepares to go condo, the union representing its union is spending $2 million on a Stop The Plaza campaign; two jewelers who run shops in the hotel are suing over the hotel's April 30 closing date and the quality of the service was said to be slipping to Motel 6 standards. And a few more salty snippits from today's Newsday: The air conditioning in the Plaza Hotel's presidential suite broke several years ago, and the owners decided not to spend the $100,000 it would take to fix it.
About 30 of the 805 chambers are out of commission, left uninhabitable by water damage. During heavy rains buckets are placed outside the Palm Court to prevent drips from ruining the carpet.
