Hotels rack up $1.3 billion in hidden fees - analyst

Consumer Reports warns that hidden hotel charges are on the rise, netting the industry $1.3 billion in extra fees, according to an analyst with PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Consumer Reports says it's worth it to dispute the charges -- ranging from built-in tips and administrative fees for room service to charges for unused use of the pool or room safe -- but the best way to avoid a rip-off is to find out up front:

Ask the reservation agent at the time of booking if there are charges other than room-occupancy and sales taxes, and be sure you understand the hotel’s arrival and departure policies.
