Subway crime rises slightly due to iPod theft
Subway crime is up and it's the iPod's fault, the Daily News reports.
Subway felonies so far this year are up 14 percent over this time a year ago, an most often, it's the magical little music player the thieves are after. Although at 10 felonies a day, that's still below the 12 to 17 daily average during 1995-2000. NY1 followed up the story this morning, and was unable to interview anyone very worried about theft on the subway, which carries 7 million riders daily.
From the Daily News: The crooks grab an iPod and jump off trains just as the doors are closing - an old-time technique that's proven useful in snatching the high-tech devices. Police have responded by dispatching teams of eight officers and a sergeant patrolling stations where robberies are up.
Recently there were reports that New York University was warning its students about a rash of iPod thefts. Though the NYU student paper followed up the story, noting only four have been stolen since December, including two that were unattended.
