Plaza's owner may build new hotel elsewhere
The owner of The Plaza hotel said he wants to build a brand spankin' new luxury hotel after he shutters the historic grand dame and converts it almost entirely into condos, the Daily News reports.
But leaders of the hospitality workers union -- who are protesting the conversion -- said his gambit is just a publicity stunt to counter the bad press over the condo plan.
Elad Properties will close The Plaza at the end of April to convert 805 hotel rooms into 200 condos. It will reopen in 2006 with only 150 hotel rooms, none of which will have Central Park views.
