Pedicab company sidelined in insurance dispute
The city's largest pedicab company is off the streets looking for new insurance after a $1.9 million settlement with a Florida couple who were injured when the pedicab they were riding in was hit by a bus, the Daily News reports. The insurer for Pedicabs of New York was only liable for $150,000 settlement over the 2001 Fifth Avenue crash which resulted in back and shoulder injuries for the couple.
The most interesting point is that Pedicabs of New York isn't even required to carry insurance under city law. Department of Consumer Affairs Commissioner Gretchen Dykstra acknowledged that "pedicabs seem to be everywhere" and her agency is exploring the possibility of licensing them and studying what other cities have done. Of the city's 200 or so bicycle taxis, only about half are insured, according to an estimate from George Bliss, the owner of Pedicabs of New York.
