Nomadic Museum opens on Pier 54 - thru June 6
As Christo and Jeanne Claude's people are still folding up "The Gates" in Central Park, another big-production temporary outdoor art exhibit is opening in New York this weekend. The Nomadic Museum -- located below 14th Street on the West Side Highway -- is made from huge multi-colored shipping containers stacked like Legos covering the entire length of Pier 54 as it juts out into the Hudson River. Inside you'll find "Ashes and Snow" - 200 oversized photographs by Gregory Colbert of man's interaction with whales, elephants and other animals. By all accounts thus far, it's a very compelling show and worth the $12 admission.
Apartment Therapy attended the opening Thursday night and loved the art. "This is a must see, but dress warmly and avoid the crowds as it can kill the atmosphere for what is a very spiritual and calming experience."
The 45,000-square-foot structure designed by architect Shigeru Ban is the city's second-largest exhibition space ever, (after "The Gates,") according to the Daily News. The show will remain open until June 6, when the art will be packed into the shipping containers and sent to its next location, Santa Monica, Calif.
The show is open Tuesdays to Thursdays, 11 a.m.-7 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays, 11 a.m.-8 p.m.; Sundays, noon-5 p.m. It's closed Mondays.
