The Plaza's 'starting to resemble a Motel 6' - Grove

As the super-posh Plaza hotel eases toward closing for a two-year renovation, the quality of service has dropped off to Motel 6 levels, according to unnamed tipsters in the Daily News' Lloyd Grove column.

The rooms and hallways are "filthy," minibars are empty, unused shampoo and lotion is being recycled for other guests, plates are mismatched in the Palm Court, teaspoons are in short supply and cloth napkins have been replaced by paper. And "the once-posh Oyster Bar is now serving strictly pub food," Grove reports.

The new owner of the historic hotel plans to close the building April 30 to convert most of the rooms into condos and make way for luxury shopping on the lower floors. "It's obvious the new owners are milking the building for everything they can get," a hotel workers' union spokesman Grove reports.

A rep for the hotel responded this way: "The Plaza Hotel is at a historic transition period. The staff of the Plaza continues to do its best to deliver services befitting the hotel's legacy with all available resources."
