Hundreds rally in protest of The Plaza's condo plan
Hundreds of unionized employees of The Plaza rallied yesterday in front of the hotel, hoping to quash the new owner's plan to shutter the landmark for 18 months and turn it into a condo/hotel/retail center, the Post reports. As planned, about 900 workers would be laid off April 30.
Indeed, there is some political backing for the protesters, as they were joined by Manhattan City Councilwoman Christine Quinn and likely mayoral candidate Fernando Ferrer, NY1 said. Earlier this week, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he hopes The Plaza's conversion would preserve more hotel rooms. Only 80 of The Plaza's 805 rooms would remain as part of a hotel, according to an earlier report.
Update: The opposition has a web site: SavethePlaza.com.
