$135 mln Staten Island Ferry terminal officially open

The new $135 million Staten Island Ferry terminal will officially open today, NY1 is reporting. (Although when I was down there Sunday, a security guard told me they've been open about two weeks. Yet the sign out front was still "state"-less.)

The old terminal was badly damaged in a 1991 fire but construction of the new terminal didn't begin until June, 2000. At least one person interviewed by NY1 said she feared the the cost of the structure might mean the free ferry might start charging a fee.

A new terminal at St. George on the Staten Island side is expected to open by the end of this year, NY1 reports.
