Tourism hits high as 40 million visited NYC in 2004
Preliminary numbers show New York City attracted nearly 40 million tourists in 2004, a record number and an increase of almost 5 percent from a year earlier, according the city's tourism bureau, NYC & Co.
International tourism was up 10.2 percent, the first rise since the attacks of September 11, 2001. The 5.3 million foreign visitors accounted for 40 percent of the tourist spending here. They were lured in part by the weak dollar, Reuters notes, and an advertising campaign starring Japanese-born Yankee fielder Hideki Matsui, who helped boost Japanese visits by 20 percent, the Daily News notes.
The United Kingdom sent the most travelers -- 970,000 -- a 12 percent increase; while Canada came in second with 750,000; Japan was third with 350,000, and Germany came next with 310,000 tourists.
As you might guess, the airports also saw record numbers. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said about 39 million air passengers, an increase of 13 percent, used the area’s three airports through October 2004.
