Southwest to begin service to New York next month

Southwest Airlines will begin air service to LaGuardia and Newark airports beginning Feb. 4 through an arrangement with ATA airlines, SmarterTravel reports.

The flights will be on ATA planes connecting through Chicago's Midway Airport. While the new "code share" plan allows fliers to book the whole trip through Southwest with a single ticket, USA Today points out that the usual cost savings might not be there: "customers shouldn't expect many of the below-$100 round-trip fares that made the airline famous. Also, the agreement between Southwest and ATA does not allow the use of Southwest frequent-flier rewards on ATA flights."

One-way from LaGuardia to San Diego, excluding taxes and fees, is $179, according to Smarter Travel.
