JFK making way for immense new Airbus A380

As the world gets its first look at the 555-passenger Airbus A380 in France, JFK Airport is planning $120-million worth of renovations to handle the 1.2-million-pound plane, which has not yet flown. (For some reason, I can't get the image of the one-flight-only Spruce Goose out of my head. Why is that?)

JFK needs to widen its runways, move a taxiway and strengthen some bridges, Newsday reports. Lufthansa, Virgin Atlantic, Air France, Singapore and Emirates are among the airlines with Kennedy service that have placed orders for the A380. No word on how many years before the plane will start flying into JFK, but apparently it's a matter if when not if. From Newsday:

It was never an option for Kennedy Airport to say no to the A380, said Port Authority Chairman Charles Gargano. Gargano said in an interview last week that the economic impact of the A380 in its first full year of operation at Kennedy is estimated at $82 million, including $32-million worth of new jobs at the airport.
Though my favorite line in the story is this: "The Port Authority says the flying public won't notice the changes because construction will be phased in gradually." That's right, no one ever notices the construction at JFK. Maybe because the construction never seems to stop. Is it like the Winchester Mystery Airport, and they just keep building and building to keep the ghosts confused?
