Greyhound vs. Chinatown on $15 NYC-Boston route

The $15 bus fares between New York's Chinatown and Boston have Greyhound Lines in a cutthroat fare war on the big dog's most-traveled corridor, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Run primarily by immigrants, Chinatown buses started about eight years ago, taking Chinese workers cheaply to nearby cities. But the success of the cheap fares grew, a dozen lines sprouted up, and turf and fares wares even resulted in bloodshed.

Greyhound, a struggling $1 billion company owned by Laidlaw Intl., now finds itself up against the Expedia-type booking site Ivy Media, which sells cheap fares on a number of routes for a number of competing companies. Last summer, Greyhound dropped its lowest fare to $15 and has gained some of the customers back, the Journal reports.
