Transit agency hikes fees for subways, buses, bridges

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has ticked off New Yorkers by voting to raise subway and bus fares as of Feb. 27. While a single ride will remain $2, it's the prices for the 7-day (to $24 from $21,) and monthly passes (to $76 from $70,) that are going up. Fares will also rise for commuter railroads, express buses and tolls at the MTA's nine bridges and tunnels.

The New York Times helps you do the math in a sidebar:

Right now, at $21, the seven-day card is a better deal than the pay-per-ride card if you take a round trip seven days a week. That will no longer be true. At the $24 fare, you'll have to take 15 rides a week (or 7½ round trips) for the seven-day card to be a good deal. At that level, you'd be paying $1.60 a ride.
In addition to the hikes, the MTA will be cutting back service and closing 164 token booths. Toot toot.
