Foreign tourists leading NYC holiday boom
City tourism officials have again hiked expectations for 2004, due mainly to the spike in overseas visitors, Newsday and Crain's NY reports. Nearly 40 million tourists are expected in New York City by the end of the year, nearly 2 million more than 2003, according to NYC & Company, the city's tourism office. "Demand is very strong - we're forecasting just six days in December that won't be sellouts," said Matt Zolbe, director of marketing at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel on Park Avenue. "The international traveler really is the lynchpin right now." Although international tourism to the city is expected to reach 5.3 million, a rise 10 percent over last year, it would still be down 22 percent from 2000. The Newsday story also reports the Waldorf has seen a 25 percent more bookings from just about every country except France.
