Dorothy Parker Society bidding farewell to Oak Room
The Dorothy Parker Society of New York is among those paying its respects to the Oak Room at the Plaza hotel before it's ripped apart and shuttered to make way for places to go shopping. From the Society's newsletter: In January 1920, Dorothy Parker was taken to the Plaza hotel by her boss at Vanity Fair and fired, due to her scathing reviews of Billie Burke (years before Oz). We salute her pink slip ways, and at the same time, say goodbye to one of the most classic bars in the city's history. ... The Round Tablers (as well as Fitzgerald and Hemingway) sipped here, and so will we. NOTE: Drinks here are NOT CHEAP. Martini? $20 + (start saving quarters now). Their outing is planned for Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. The Post reports that the new owners of the hotel, Elad Properties, will close the Oak Room and Oyster Bar by the end of January and ONEc.p.s. will close by Jan. 1.
