Bryant Park hopes to install ice rink next winter
Next winter, Bryant Park hopes to install a portable Olympic-sized ice skating rink on the lawn behind the main library -- if they can find a corporate sponsor, the New York Times reports. Plans call for the rink to go up from November to January and allow free skating to anyone who brings their own skates. The story also notes what's under Bryant Park: "a climate-controlled cocoon for book storage that is an extension of the stacks of the New York Public Library."
The ice rink is part of a plan to make better winter-time use of the park, which is currently home to a holiday shopping bazaar - including a tent selling rich MarieBelle hot chocolate for about $3 a shot. As of last week, the park now has heated tents for chess and checkers players and another for an outdoor reading room. Free wi-fi has been available at the park since 2002; so far this year, there have been 39,000 log-ons.
