Airtrain approaches 1-year anniversary, still short of goal
A fizzy Newsday story about Airtrain touts the success of the service to JFK, which will turn one year old Friday. With 2.5 million riders this year, the service is attracting 30,000 to 33,000 riders a day -- somewhat short of its 34,000 goal. Not all of those are paying customers though, as it includes non-ticketed riders who use the free service connecting terminals and long-term parking. To serve the AirTrain, a terminal was built at Jamaica with escalators and elevators from the LIRR platform to a mezzanine that connects to the AirTrain. Construction began on the site in 1998, and is almost 91 percent complete. It will be finished by December 2005, LIRR officials said.
"As the portal was opened up and transfer is made easier, we will see more and more people using AirTrain," said LIRR President James Dermody.
The $226-million LIRR rehabilitation project includes the replacement of all station platforms and the western pedestrian bridge as well as canopy reconstruction. Earlier: Airport troubles, pondering solutions
