Don't sleep in: Open House New York this weekend

The second annual Open House New York is this weekend.

Earlier: Open House NY set for weekend of Oct. 9

Update, (Oct. 10): Yesterday we stopped by a couple OHNY sights, both chosen for their kid-friendly aspects. We toured a funky Chelsea townhouse, where my stepson was delighted to see the koi stream inside the house. It's partly under plexiglass through the living room floor, designed in the shape of the Yangtze River as it flows to the backyard pond. I expected it to be pretentious, but the place was actually cozy and it was quite refreshing to see the beds weren't even made in the girls' bedrooms.

The other place we saw was the General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen, which not only has a cool collection of antique locks, but random oddities like a coin taken from a pirate before he was executed, a pass to the opening ceremonies of Grant's Tomb and a bracelet charm commemorating the inauguration of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Update 2: Curbed has an online photo roundup of OHNY coverage.

Update 3: Kevin Walsh of Forgotten NY has posted an extensive gallery of pictures from the Jefferson Market tower, the High Bridge, the Caroline Ladd Pratt House, the Pratt Institute's machine shop and library, plus the headquarters of the architectural firm TEK.
