Statue of Liberty tours resume

After Sept. 11, the Statue of Liberty was closed to tourists. But months later Liberty Island was reopened - it's where I spent the morning of the one-year anniversary of Sept. 11 -- and airport-type security was added at the dock. This week, the base was finally reopened to tourists, but despite all the silly news stories written about it, I can't find one that makes clear if the museum is re-opened or if it's been truncated. What is clear is that you should expect strict security (no pocketknives in your purse, etc.) and you should make a reservation for a tour. Everyone is lamenting that you can't go up in the flame, but the one time I intended to try - when my brother was in town about five years ago - we were told the line to get up top was six hours. So much for that nostalgia trip.
