NYC tourism hits record
Looks like New York tourists are just as tough as the people who live here. A mere two years after the attacks, 2003 recorded the highest numbers ever for city tourism, new statistics show. A whopping 37.8 million tourists visited the city last year, topping the 1999 record of 36.4 million. From this morning's Daily News: "With a few exceptions, visitors to New York, like New Yorkers themselves, are not being intimidated - they are enjoying everything that the world's second home has to offer," Bloomberg told reporters at the city's Visitor Information Center in midtown. Although visits by foreign tourists were down, it remains their top U.S. destination, the Daily News reported. As for American tourists, Disney World is the country's top destination with NYC in second.
The AP story also highlights the fact that hotel room rates continue to decline. "Rooms cost an average of $193 a night, compared to $237 a night in 2000, according to NYC & Company."
Over at the NYC & Co. Web site, you can see they're predicting even higher tourism totals for 2004.
